The World of Flower Essences

Ancient plant wisdom for emotional balance, connection and inner wellbeing

The healing relationship between humans and plants has existed for thousands of years. Across cultures and traditions, flowers, trees and plants have been honoured for their ability to support wellbeing, connection and transformation.

Flower essences have roots in ancient traditions, with records of plant-based healing practices appearing throughout history. In more recent times, Dr Edward Bach created the well-known Bach Flower Remedies in the 1930s, including the widely recognised Rescue Remedy.

So, what exactly are flower essences?

Flower essences are subtle vibrational remedies created from the energetic imprint of a flower, tree, crystal or sacred space held within water. They work with the emotional and energetic layers of our experience, gently supporting balance, awareness and personal growth.

Many practitioners describe essences as a bridge between the natural world and our own inner landscape — allowing the wisdom and qualities of plants to support us on our journey.

How are flower essences made?

Every essence maker has their own relationship, training and method of working with plants. At the heart of essence creation is a deep connection and respectful communication with the plant or environment from which the essence is created.

Traditionally, Bach Flower Remedies were created using either the sun method or boiling method. Dr Bach beautifully described the relationship between the elements involved:

“Let it be noticed in this that the four elements are involved; the earth to nurture the plant; the air from

which it feeds; the sun or fire to enable it to impart its power; and water to collect and to be enriched

with its beneficent magnetic healing.”

Dr Edward Bach, referenced in Form and Function by Julian Barnard

What are essences made from?

A flower essence usually contains:

Spring water imprinted with the energy of a plant, tree, crystal or energetic space

Brandy in a very small amount, traditionally used as a natural preservative

For those who cannot use alcohol, alternative preservatives such as glycerine can be used.

Bespoke for You

Every person’s journey is unique, and so are the remedies that may support them.

Flower essences are described as “bespoke” because combinations can be intuitively selected to reflect your current emotional landscape, experiences and needs. A remedy created for you today may be different from the one you are drawn to in another season of life.

How can Flower Essences Support You?

Flower essences are gentle companions for emotional and energetic wellbeing.

They can support you in areas such as:

  • Living a more soul-led life

  • Finding clarity and direction

  • Emotional balance

  • Developing intuition and self-trust

  • Creating calm and inner peace

  • Authentic self-expression

  • Compassion for yourself and others

  • Feeling grounded and connected

  • Creating space for new possibilities

Are Flower Essences Safe?

Flower essences are considered gentle and suitable for adults, children and animals. They are natural remedies and generally have no known contraindications. The main consideration is alcohol content for those who must completely avoid alcohol. Alcohol-free options can be created when needed.

How do Flower Essences Work?

Flower essences work in a subtle way, supporting awareness of our thoughts, emotions and patterns. Many people notice small shifts first — changes in perspective, feelings, responses or a sense of emotional movement. Over time, the original concern may feel lighter, less overwhelming or no longer as prominent.

As we change, the remedy that supports us may naturally change too.

How to take your Essence?

Flower essences are usually taken orally from a 30ml glass dropper bottle.

Simply place:

4 drops into water or 4 drops directly under the tongue.

A common suggestion is 4 drops, three times daily.

Other ways to work with Essences

Flower essences are wonderfully versatile companions. Whether you are seeking calm, clarity, confidence, healing or a deeper connection with yourself, there is always another layer of plant wisdom waiting to be discovered.

Aura Sprays

Your essence can also be incorporated into a personalised aura spray alongside carefully chosen essential oils. Aura sprays can be used throughout your day as a supportive ritual. Some ways clients enjoy using them:

  • Creating calm before sleep

  • Refreshing a workspace

  • Supporting emotional boundaries

  • Preparing for challenging situations

  • Helping settle nervous animals before stressful events

Bathing Rituals

Flower essences can be added to bathing rituals. Whether you enjoy a full bath or simply soaking your feet, this creates a beautiful moment of connection and reflection. The skin is our largest organ, and many people enjoy incorporating essences into their self-care practices in this way.

Aroma Streams

Simply add 4 drops of your chosen essence to your aroma stream along with water and essential oils.
